What colour art should I choose? I am asked this question often. It is a mixture of personal preference and I work closely with clients to help them find the right work of art for their collection. We discuss how the colour will impact a room and I show examples of my art in different interiors. You can see images here of art on the wall.

Blues are generally cooler and fresh. However, you can add renaissance gold to deep blues for a really warm feeling. Yellows and oranges give a warm sunshine feeling and can uplift a room. Reds can be dynamic and black is very bold and elegant. Earth tones are soothing and work well with natural creams and whites for a soft look. Multi coloured art is created to uplift and make the room feel colourful and spacious. They can also be used to give a bolder splash of colour.

What art will suit my interior ?

I am often asked what art will suit my interior. My reply is a question. I ask what type of room is the art for? I then ask how a client wants to feel in that room. For example do your want the room to feel relaxed, uplifted or make a statement. A statement work of art can be a strong focal point. It makes a significant difference to any interior. I tend to recommend dynamic pieces for dining rooms and hallways and more relaxing pieces to bedrooms and calm seating areas. For boardrooms I often suggest subtle colours on white to make the room feel joyful but calm. For receptions areas we can choose stronger colours and dramatic textured effects.

Can an interior design issue be resolved by buying art?

Buying art can add more colour to a room, it can make it much more elegant and turn it into a special place. Perhaps a home or workspace needs more character? Art can easily solve this interior design issue. The room might be too neutral and you want add a soft gentle painting to rest your mind and relax into. Subtle beauty is easy to live with.

Art for wellbeing is a wonderful thing. Creativity can be an excuse to just be in the moment and relax. To doodle or scribble can be a simple joy. Painting can transcends reality into a moment of pleasure, focus or freedom. The above work of art is called “Calm in You”. Available art for sale

Art to express emotions and for wellbeing

We can all use art or creativity to express our emotions. This can be in paint, dance, sculpting, any kind of craft, spoken word or written poetry. For me picking up a brush has been a way to escape reality. I used it as a way to talk when I could not find anyone to hear me or when what I wanted to say was too challenging for others to bear. Sometimes within relationships we do not speak our truth as that would hurt others. Being still or playful with paint gave me a voice and then the art became my voice. I then became seen and known which was ironic considering where the desire to paint came from.

From Mental Health to Glory

In 2000 I suffered an emotional breakdown. I lost my Nan and also my Father in Law in the same year. It brought back the pain of the loss of my mother from when I was a 14. I was forced to take a break from what had been a very successful career. I was chasing money to feel safe and for practical reasons to pay for a home, but i needed to learn emotional freedom. My anxiety had increased and I was shaken or overwhelmed by the smallest things. My sensitivity came to the surface and I decided to go to hospital for a month.

It was here I took up boxing to get out my frustrations. That hurt my hands so I turned to splashing paint for a gentler comfort. This evolved into using pastels and blending sky scenes, which was less messy. Finally, holding a brush and palette knife to create gentle blends as well as exuberant swoops and swirls.

My art career and wellbeing

My art career was born out of mental crisis. I learned to play again, Many people at my friend’s church prayed for me and I recovered well enough to return to my former career in project management. However, the urge to paint remained. Eventually, I became a full time artist in 2005 after a few years of being employed and setting up my art business. I attended art shows and events at weekends and took on commissioned art projects. My recovery was due to both prayer and paint. God found a way to speak to me when I was still enough to listen, yet occupied in creativity. If you review the titles of my art you can see the messages of my soul speaking.

Wellbeing, nature and art

Here are a few techniques I learned on my journey to recovery.
Look up at the sky, cloud watch or feel the expanse of peace. it is a calm space without people. Whatever the weather from grey to brilliant blue it can give you something. Nature has a way of listening and skies have always been my thing as the sky makes me feel free wherever I am. Even on the underground I know there is a sky above me and just imagine or reflect on one when I need to feel calm and free. Most of my paintings start with an expansive sky. Trees have a way of making me feel safe. Walking in woodland seeing the colours of the leaves especially at autumn and walking in wellies joyfully kicking leaves is still a pleasure of mine. Beautiful landscape makes me feel peaceful.

Tips and Tools for Calm

Breathe in for 7 and out for 11. This will break the anxiety fight or flight mode and restore calm.

Splash your face with cold water, it stops overthinking and brings you to the present moment. I cold shower too, after a hot shower as again it stimulates the circulation (check first with a doctor)

Dance at home, put the music up or headphones on and move. This releases endorphins and brings you to the moment. I joined a few classes and my favourite is one is zumba. I have also learned salsa and there are many more types of dance to try. This gave me an instant social life outside of work.

Run, walk or jog, it also releases endorphins. I don’t always want to, but I always feel better for doing it. Listen to your body. One step at a time.

Mindfulness or reset from where you are now, not where you were. I called them Sara steps…Create new goals, take action or stop achieving and just be depending on where you are in your mentality.

Take professional advice. I took counselling and also went for prayer.

Diet: managing blood sugar levels can be very useful to help control mood. Negativity is harder to fight if we are tired or hungry. There are many social media platforms or books to help with this. Eating greens, protein and then carbs in this order is simple and effective.

Pet an animal with the owners permission. The painting above is about my faith and was also inspired by stroking my neighbours cat, The act of being kind to an animal nourished and calmed me.

Can I manage my thoughts by creativity?

Manage your thoughts or don’t react to them emotionally without reflection. Creativity can be a way for your subconscious to process a situation or circumstance. The bible says take very thought captive 2 corinthians 10:5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. I have been taught we have 3 places of thought: from ourselves, good and evil. We therefore have the power to choose how to react or what we listen to internally.

Feed your mind with positive books, speech and surround yourself with people who have a can do approach to life. What we listen to feeds our subconscious. Proverbs gives biblical advice.

Go to bed early, good sleep is medicine.

How do I become creative?

To become creative, just begin. Pick up a pencil, paintbrush or anything that feels right to you. I have a friend who was ill and wrote it all down on paper screwed up the paper and discovered he could sculpt. How wonderfully positive. He recovered and is now a full time sculptor. This is definately an example of art for wellbeing.

When it comes to choosing to be creative don’t think and just do. Let go of the outcome and enjoy the process. You don’t have to keep every work of art. Perhaps start with a doodle and stop, or perhaps carry on and colour it in, and let your creative journey begin.

Large Wall Art

Large wall art. City Landscape fusion in art by Sara Sherwood. London, Scotland and Montenegro.

Large wall art is a speciality of mine and I love creating big works of art. Large canvas cityscapes are often a fusion of ideas. This one was inspired by a monastery dedicated to Saint Basil of Ostrog in Montenegro. The monastery building stands strong nestled into the rock. It is a magnificent feat of architecture. I then imagined Saint Pauls Cathedral in the same way as a rock and symbolic of my faith. The title of the art is self explanatory “God is my rock and fortress”. “From another land” and “Going with the eagles” also came to mind as possible titles, as I painted. The monastery is high in the rock, and eagles can soar around it. The london buildings are there but only in texture so the work at first glance appears as landscape art not a cityscape. Layers of depth visually and in the thinking behind a painting is the essence of how I create large wall art. This is an abstract city and landscape fusion. My favourite piece of scripture

My favourite piece of scripture which gets me through many a hard time is taken from Isaiah 40:31. “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles.” My testimony is to know God will be your rock and fortress in trials and that He is there in challenging situations. When I waiver in faith I cry out to the saints to pray to God for me as they became my family in desolate times, especially during the wilderness of life issues.

Sensitivity as an Artist channelled into creativity

My sensitivity as an artist has been a great gift, and I’m very thankful. Art became my quiet inner voice. I would encourage everyone to be creative in any form. It is a great outlet for emotion. I generally paint when I am happy or peaceful or use it as a tool to become that way. The process of creativity is the result, not the final product. However, when it works well, both are in cohesive alignment.

Does GPSR apply to art sales internationally?

Does GPSR apply to art sales was a question I was concerned about. I ship art internationally so was keen to find an answer. After some quick research on https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/E-10-2024-001835-ASW_EN.html The answer states that The GPSR does not apply to antiques, work of art or collectors’ items. This was answered on 6.11.14 by Mr Renders on behalf of the European Commission. I also found this really great blog that explains in more detail https://johndyergallery.com/pages/eu-gpsr-regulations-artists-and-art-gallery-artworks this is their interpretation of the GPSR guidelines and how it impacts on their gallery business. Thank you John Dyer Gallery. with regard to selling existing print runs: the art was compliant with the 2005 UK GPSR (as it applies/applied before 13 Dec 2024) may continue to be sold in the EU and NI. This includes all existing art pieces and print runs already on the market. See article 51, transactional arrangements. All my current print runs were placed on the market prior to 13 December 2024. “My print products are part of an existing range that was already on the market before 13 December 2024, and it fully complies with Directive 2001/95/EC. However, under Article 51, it falls outside the scope of Regulation (EU) 2023/988. See my website and order history is available for evidence of this. As I understand it GPSR does not apply to unique items produced in small quantities. My art paintings are all one-off. They do not have bar codes just a photograph reference number for my internal and website image management. No EAN barcodes, serial or batch numbers are used. Can you ship art internationally?

Sara Sherwood Art ships original oil on canvas and hand embellished prints internationally. GPSR does not apply to art sales internationally according to the above source. This art can be sent in a roll or in a custom made box. These boxes are handmade to order each time from plywood. Prior to this, the art is usually wrapped in bubble wrap or suitable packing materials.

I have sent art to Europe and USA and as far as Australia and Singapore. I use a shipping agent that can track and deliver the art easily. Air fuel rates can fluctuate so I price on a project by project basis. To request a price email me the full address including postcode or zip. I also need to know if the canvas is going to be shipped in a roll or fully stretched at time of order as this impacts on the canvas retailer I use and the way I set things up to paint. The price of the art is the same supplied stretched or in a roll. Painting the art flat so it can be rolled is a little more time-consuming and this offsets against stretcher bar costs. The product and shipping costs are itemised. I only ship my own art as I am a lifestyle business.

Questions Answered Interview at Spitalfields Market

I exhibited art at Spitalfields Arts Market in the early stages of my career on a random basis. I returned in 2017 and have been there regularly ever since. I started exhibiting art in 2003 and became a full time artist in 2005. In the past I exhibited at Grand Designs Live for many years and at AAF Battersea and Edinburgh Art Fair more recently.

Many people visit Spitalfields Market and it offers a vibrant selection of art. There are also some beautiful and interesting designer maker goods. The street food is also great. You can buy art direct from the artists. You can ask directly about their inspiration and see the many different techniques used in the variety of paintings, photography, digital art and sculpture. It is a small niche exhibition of about 12 artists that varies from month to month along with some regulars who use Spitalfields as their main place to sell. The art is varied and there is something to suit all tastes. From small prints to large contemporary original art. Many artists work on commission. For corporates and individuals, for office or home.

Spitalfields has a wonderful community of artists and general traders. The artists and general stallholders are welcoming and offer high-quality art and interesting products from all over the world. Many of the artists are local. Everyone can buy, commission or chat with an individual artist, which is a wonderful opportunity. The whole shopping experience is unique. The Spitalfields community work together to make the experience of visiting personal and special. It is a pleasure to work there. The warmth of the other traders gets us through the colder weather.

Creative Process

I put unique elements in each work of art sometimes fusing my memories and travel experiences with special details from clients. I include anniversary dates, birthdays and even create skylines that emerge from peoples memories, backgrounds and individual stories told in buildings and landscapes or abstract colours.

London as Inspiration

London is a wonderful and vibrant city old buildings juxtaposed against new. It has something to offer in all seasons. I am constantly inspired by the reflections in both the pavements on a rainy day and in the River Thames. I admire the crisp outlines of the architecture on a bright sunny day. The mixture of building heights and shapes all together. Ups and downs, twists and turns. Different building colours, culture and expression. It is a wonderful city.

Large Canvas Wall Art

Large canvas wall art. London cityscape. I Found the Bottom of the Rainbow

Large canvas wall art is my passion and peace. Painting large art is a way of escaping reality and relaxing. It then creates a new deeper reality on canvas. The swooping skies capture my imagination. I approach a blank canvas with a mixture of trepidation and joy. I don’t know the outcome I only know the process. This painting is about my love of art and my joy in creativity. It is called “I found the bottom of the rainbow” to express this gratitude. The pot of gold is seen in the skyline to the left by the trees.

London Artist

A London artist painting London skylines full time since 2005. I often paint the sky first as that allows me to breathe. Bold and sweeping brushstrokes to give a sense of movement. The painting depicts a rainbow emerging majestically above London’s iconic landmarks. The abstract art effect of the rainbow and the incorporation of light, dark and vibrant colours on a white background present hope and transformation. The rainbow a biblical symbol of hope also used throughout the community to visually inspire and uplift. It also has an ethereal quality of mystery.

Surrealism in Art

The city’s skyline is mirrored in the water. These reflections offer a distorted effect of surrealism. Abstract, impressionism styles are also captured here. The buildings are still recognisable. Highlighting London’s prominent architecture, landmarks and features. Surrealism in art is a wondrous thing. Limited only by the imagination. Quality of brushstroke and blending colours is paramount to bringing a warm and uplifting atmosphere in the painting. Our great buildings emerge as features of triumph in a city skyline. I hope this vibrant joy in art finds you in peace at the bottom of the rainbow of life.

Saint Joseph the Hesychast

Saint Joseph the Hesychast, unceasing prayer of the heart. He was given the gift of unceasing prayer of the heart. He practiced the Jesus prayer and lived an austere monastic life. The stories of the saints inspire me and I take comfort from their ability to overcome struggles. You can read more

The Jesus Prayer

To calm my mind I recite the Jesus prayer. “Lord Jesus Christ, son of God have mercy on me, a sinner”. Sometimes I say this in my head when I paint. I created “Sea of Flowers” as a result. A local priest loved this work of art so commissioned an alter cover with this design printed onto it. When he chose it, he did not know the influence of the prayer in this abstract work of art. The flowers merge into sea and the story of the parting of the red sea came to mind as I worked, hence the title. I find this biblical passage calming “The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.”

Noetic Prayer

St Jospeh the Hesychast lived from 1897 – 1959 and practiced the art of noetic prayer. I have also been greatly inspired by Saint Nektarios, Saint Silouan, Saint Sophrony and am very grateful. The Jesus prayer is profound, mind altering and a mystery and goes far beyond my understanding so I recommend if you are interested you seek advise from a Spiritual Father in a Christian orthodox church.

Rainbow Art

Rainbow Art as a sign of Hope in the Wilderness. Genesis 9 verses 12 to 16. The bible is still relevant. I was sent a rainbow to follow on two occasions when my sat nav did not work due to the locations. I was lost in a wilderness and lead to safety by following the bottom of the rainbow to get to my pilgrimage destinations. Once, when I was going to St Peters Chapel in Bradwell on Sea and again, to Saint Winefried’s well and shrine at Holywell in North Wales. 

Rainbows Everywhere

When I was lost it just popped in my head to follow the bottom of the rainbow. I found my pot of gold in God’s riches in these places of sanctuary. The rainbow is a symbol of hope in the Bible and this is why so many of my painting titles have the word rainbow in them. I called this painting “Rainbows Everywhere” as thanks to God for sending me the rainbows and leading me out of my spiritual wilderness. 

Rainbow Art inspired by Saint Winefried’s well and shrine at Holywell

I immersed myself 3 times in Holywell stating that I believe in the Holy Trinity. It was a transformation. It was symbolic of baptism and a new start. The art represents this greater symbol of hope in Jesus Christ in an abstract and contemporary way. All sins forgiven and the hope in a new day. I use my talent or gift of painting in the best way I know how: to celebrate. It makes me happy when my art makes others happy. 

I aim to stay present and witness the small miracles and wonder that happen in every day moments. If I focus on the positive and joy, it helps me cope with the wilderness times in life. In the past I have struggled with anxiety and depression and Jesus Christ healed me so I know he is real from this experience. If I struggle mildly now, I choose to be grateful and it changes my focus and attitude. This is also the teaching from the Christian Greek Orthodox Holy Fathers. Saint Sophrony and Saint Silouan pray to God for us. I was also lead to a monastery and helped by their prayers by a painting commission but that is a story for another day “Gunmetal Sky” armour of God. 

The Bible verse about rainbows representing the sign of the covenant between God and the earth is found in Genesis 9 verses 12 to 16.

Religious Art “Wilderness to Glory”

Religious Art Contemporary Style from wilderness to glory.

This religious art was inspired by Durham Cathedral. The title is “From Wilderness to Glory”. In this contemporary religious art, it is a visual metaphor using Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral. The 22 carat gold leaf represents a journey internally moving from the wilderness without a life in Christ i.e. the castle to the cathedral. I have used gold leaf that represents something precious to God: our soul as we journey through life. In the original oil on canvas the cathedral was highlighted with real diamonds. This was my way to signify something so glorious and holy and beautiful. It reflects my joy in finding God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Contemporary Religious Art and Glory to God

As an artist I have journeyed for peace via new-age, yoga, chakras, and positive self talk. Nothing prepared me for the experience of the Glory of God when I ended up in a Christian orthodox church in Greece. I now express my spiritual journey from “wilderness to glory” as contemporary religious art. Painting my testimony is my strongest inner voice and I hope it speaks to you to inspire and uplift. I have chosen psalm 107 to express this in biblical form.

What does the wilderness symbolise in the bible ?

An isolated place, a barren land. Jesus himself is tested in the wilderness: Matthew 4. Hope and assurance for peace in metaphorical emotional wilderness is expressed in psalm 29 11 The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace.

Psalm 107

Psalm 107 refers to desert wastelands verse 4 and is biblical testimony / discernment to the message of His unfailing love in my art inspiration. NIV Bible

1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
    his love endures forever.

2 Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story—
    those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
3 those he gathered from the lands,
    from east and west, from north and south.[a]

4 Some wandered in desert wastelands,
    finding no way to a city where they could settle.
5 They were hungry and thirsty,
    and their lives ebbed away.
6 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
7 He led them by a straight way
    to a city where they could settle.
8 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
    and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
9 for he satisfies the thirsty
    and fills the hungry with good things.

10 Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness,
    prisoners suffering in iron chains,
11 because they rebelled against God’s commands
    and despised the plans of the Most High.
12 So he subjected them to bitter labor;
    they stumbled, and there was no one to help.
13 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he saved them from their distress.
14 He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness,
    and broke away their chains.
15 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
    and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
16 for he breaks down gates of bronze
    and cuts through bars of iron.

17 Some became fools through their rebellious ways
    and suffered affliction because of their iniquities.
18 They loathed all food
    and drew near the gates of death.
19 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he saved them from their distress.
20 He sent out his word and healed them;
    he rescued them from the grave.
21 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
    and his wonderful deeds for mankind.
22 Let them sacrifice thank offerings
    and tell of his works with songs of joy.

23 Some went out on the sea in ships;
    they were merchants on the mighty waters.
24 They saw the works of the Lord,
    his wonderful deeds in the deep.
25 For he spoke and stirred up a tempest
    that lifted high the waves.
26 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;
    in their peril their courage melted away.
27 They reeled and staggered like drunkards;
    they were at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he brought them out of their distress.
29 He stilled the storm to a whisper;
    the waves of the sea[b] were hushed.
30 They were glad when it grew calm,
    and he guided them to their desired haven.
31 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
    and his wonderful deeds for mankind.
32 Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people
    and praise him in the council of the elders.

33 He turned rivers into a desert,
    flowing springs into thirsty ground,
34 and fruitful land into a salt waste,
    because of the wickedness of those who lived there.
35 He turned the desert into pools of water
    and the parched ground into flowing springs;
36 there he brought the hungry to live,
    and they founded a city where they could settle.
37 They sowed fields and planted vineyards
    that yielded a fruitful harvest;
38 he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased,
    and he did not let their herds diminish.

39 Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled
    by oppression, calamity and sorrow;
40 he who pours contempt on nobles
    made them wander in a trackless waste.
41 But he lifted the needy out of their affliction
    and increased their families like flocks.
42 The upright see and rejoice,
    but all the wicked shut their mouths.

43 Let the one who is wise heed these things
    and ponder the loving deeds of the Lord.
