Spitalfields Arts Market Q&A

Paintings of London at Spitalfields Art Market Abstract art by Sara Sherwood

What do you love most about Spitalfields Arts Market and why did you choose to sell your art here?

I love the diversity of people that sell and visit Spitalfields Arts and General Market, it is a hive of creativity and talent fused with hard working and positive individuals that have build their own brands and products. It is refreshing to see unique arts that are represented directly by the artist. The Arts market gives me the perfect forum to get direct feedback from clients and the general public. I see reactions first hand and note which art sells best. I can then create new work with a specific customer base in mind. I have found many of the other artists at Spitalfields both supportive and positive. We share ideas for art products and suppliers, which have enriched all of our lives.

The area is perfect to exhibit my paintings of London and get I inspiration from the local vibe. To see more about Spitalfields Art Market https://www.spitalfields.co.uk/spitalfields-arts-market/

"Polar Paws Sky" by Sara Sherwood - Contemporary Abstract Artist London

Painting gives me a sense of freedom and escapism into another world. I listen to music and that helps me transcend into a better place. Light is a key element of my art. I just paint, focused on the moment and watch the art unfold as I work. Sometimes there is a plan but often this is overtaken by the flow and I just go with it. Some of my most fluid abstracts have happened this way, I finish the painting and then move onto the next which might be what I first intended to do. This way my work has a freedom of movement and is free. I can focus to work on commission and enjoy the purpose of creating a specific work of art for someone. This is immensely rewarding and I am grateful for the many commissions I work on.

My artistic world is full of butterflies, sunflowers and peaceful sunny days. I love painting when it is raining outside as I am cosy inside and settle more easily. I find a peace in painting and hope that expression is captured in the art. There is a spiritual element to my art and I will happily talk about this if asked directly at any of my events. See website for details  www.sarasherwood.co.uk

I am not sure how I paint exactly so if you are thinking of painting I would say just paint and see what happens. If you view it as an extension of play and let go of the outcome, just focus on having a fun, you will enjoy the process and be more likely to produce a good result. It is only paper or canvas, if you like it great and if you want to do something else, just leave it in the past and move on. Keep painting or collecting whatever your passion.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me over the last 12 years of painting full time.

Contemporary abstract Skyline artist Sara Sherwood shows cityscape at Skylark Galleries
Sara Sherwood and Trinidad Ball are this months featured artists in Skylark Gallery 2. Their work is both calm and sophisticated with a certain depth which is compelling to the viewer. Exhibition continues until 27 August Unit 1.09 Oxo Tower on London’s Southbank. For opening times www.skylarkgalleries.com
Sara Sherwood creates vibrant and expressive cityscape and abstract paintings they are sophisticated and infused with a sense of style. Painting with colours instinctively, blending with brushes and using a palette knife with intuition and spontaneity. Her compositions reveal cities as we have never seen them before. She takes iconic and legendary buildings and paints them into magical cityscapes full of colour and drama. Sara believes “Inspiration comes from a source far greater than me, nature and everyday moments. Life experiences all add to the creative process.

"Rainbows Within" oil on canvas by Sara Sherwood

“Rainbows Within” oil on canvas by Sara Sherwood

#Painting Skylines is very rewarding and I keep wanting to explore and take the art in new directions as soon as I have finished say a #painting of London, I want to try something else, like the reflections of #Tower Bridge in a new colour or putting in more flowers and then I #paint and it just happens and nothing I thought to do appears, just something else equally beautiful and then I think to do that again and then something else totally new happens. I suppose that is really letting go of the outcome!

I also enjoy the discipline of working on commission you have to keep the focus, but that just flows too.

This latest “Rainbow collection” is about celebrating joy in life. #SaraSherwoodArt at #SkylarkArtGalleries unit 1.09 #Oxo Tower Open Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 6pm. We are a collective of artists and there is an artist on duty every day. There is an eclectic mix of art; something for everyone at a range of prices or just come along and enjoy.

#SkylarkArtGalleries unit 1.09 #Oxo Tower
#SaraSherwoodArt Artist in residence on 11 February and Sat 20th Feb,11am to 6pm or by appointment.

Painting of London in oil on canvas "Your love has given me wings" by Sara Sherwood

Cityscape in oil on canvas “Your love has given me wings” by Sara Sherwood

#Spittlefields Art Market 3 to 5 September #SaraSherwoodArt
My aim is to create a cityscape that is a lightscape painting of London. Thinking about the northern lights coming to London and combining that with the energy of movement throughout the city. Combining vibrancy and calm is an interesting process on many levels. Hope you enjoy! To see more visit www.sarasherwood.co.uk

Abstract oil painting "Angel wing protects" oil on canvas by Sara Sherwood

Abstract oil painting “Angel Wing Protects” oil on canvas by Sara Sherwood

My abstract oil paintings just flow in their own direction when I work on commission. I take a brief listen to what is required then start painting, trusting and letting go. I am then free to be paint and respond with the heart and mind. This way I can create a contemporary work of art without restriction. This work of art was created to go with “Curtain of Light” it has soft silvers and magenta running through the blue. To see more abstracts check out www.sarasherwood.co.uk

Love Connects You, oil painting of London

“Love Connects You” oil painting of London

This cityscape painting is on show at gallery@lr at 71 Fenchurch Street until 8 April. The theme is of love and when you share something you enjoy with others, that connects you in a positive way. There is a butterfly and dragonfly dancing towards each other on the bridge hidden in the textures. My paintings of London show life in an etherial way.

Artist Statement by Sara Sherwood Contemporary Abstract Artist

Artist Statement by Sara Sherwood Contemporary Abstract Artist

There is beauty everywhere and I am captivated by the reflections, shapes and angles
of the city as well as the curves in nature. I interpret a view with emotion and express that in paint. My aim is to bring positivity into a work of art.

I begin to work as I am but with clear intention and faith by the end of the painting we have both been transformed into beauty with a strength that is beyond my understanding. When I am feeling very happy I use the lifted feeling in my heart to push the paint into joyous swoops and swirls and capture that moment of pleasure and freedom.

My spiritual journey and free thinking approach to fine art began in 2000. I studied at Bournemouth and Poole college of Art and Design from 1986 to 1988 and prior to that at Herefordshire college of Art and Design from 1984 to 1986. Having worked in the design sector for 16 years, I became a full time artist in 2005.

Working in oil on canvas, my passion is for colour, self-expression and fluidity. I love to work alla prima, putting colours down instinctively, blending with brushes and using my hands and a palette knife with intuition and spontaneity.

Inspiration comes from a source far greater than me: everyday moments; nature and life experiences all add to the creative process. When I paint I am fulfilled and aim to pass this love, spirituality and joy into my art.

Abstract painting "Double rainbow" by Sara Sherwood in oil on canvas

Abstract painting “Double rainbow” by Sara Sherwood in oil on canvas

Painting tip for today is follow your heart when it comes to painting. To express yourself fully I believe art has to come from the heart. The happier and more positive you can be will impact your work and follow through into your creativity. My paintings of London, New York and Paris all have positive themes and my focus is to uplift and be joyous. The abstract painting below also holds a kind wish for the couple that commissioned it. For me the process of painting is cathartic and will also heal me as I work in oil on canvas.
